After 5 years at a Big 4 accounting firm, I decided to make the move to an SME firm. That was nearly 10 years ago. And the reasons for my departure still apply today.
Daily at Auditworks, I speak to auditors who don't feel in place with their current employer and want to make a switch. The reasons vary, but there are five I hear most often:
- I get no appreciation from colleagues, managers, or the partners
- Promises are not kept
- The employment terms/benefits no longer match my role
- I want to spend more time with my family, hobbies, or want to go traveling
- Work pressure is too high and I cannot combine working and studying to become a Register Accountant anymore
Research by a medium-sized accounting firm has shown that the following three points are most decisive for job happiness:
- Work-life balance
- Culture and atmosphere
- Feeling appreciated
